What is a 350kg capacity glass elevator? Which homes should install this type of elevator?

A 350kg glass elevator is a medium-load home elevator where the cabin walls or shaft are enclosed in tempered glass instead of a solid concrete frame. A load capacity of 350kg is equivalent to comfortably accommodating 5-6 adults per trip.

This is the most popular type of elevator in the glass elevator segment , striking a balance between cabin size and shaft area. It's suitable for 3-6 story townhouses with large families and high usage frequency .

Which types of houses are suitable for installing this type of elevator?

After identifying your basic needs, the next question you need to answer is: Is this type of glass elevator suitable for your building? This is a crucial step to help you avoid additional renovation costs after installation.

With over 15 years of experience in consulting and construction, the technical team at THANGMAYNIDEC shares two of the most common scenarios that customers often encounter.

Houses that are not yet built or are under construction.

This is the ideal time to choose an elevator. At this stage, you still have many flexible options for elevator placement. THANGMAYNIDEC recommends that customers discuss this with the design team right from the drawing stage (If you already have a house plan but don't know where to install the elevator, you can contact THANGMAYNIDEC for assistance). Integrating the elevator shaft into the original design optimizes space, saves costs, and ensures the building's structural integrity.

Houses that are already built or are under renovation

This is the case that requires the most careful consideration. The minimum space required for elevator installation is 1.5m x 1.5m. If the current area is smaller than this, you need to plan for structural modifications before proceeding.

First, you should take actual measurements and compare them with the specifications of each product line. If space is limited, THANGMAYNIDEC's engineering team is ready to conduct a free survey and advise on the most suitable solution for your family's needs.

What type of frame is used for a 350kg glass elevator?

The elevator frame is the load-bearing component and provides the aesthetic shape for the entire cabin. Typically, a 350KG glass elevator will use an aluminum or steel frame.

Determining the material for the frame is not only related to the cost at the time of installation but also directly affects the appearance of the elevator for the next 10-15 years of use.

Elevator Frame Materials: Aluminum or Steel?

The two most popular materials currently available are extruded aluminum and powder-coated steel, each with its own characteristics to suit different budgets and aesthetic needs.

Extruded aluminum frames maintain their polished appearance over time without worrying about rust or surface peeling. Aluminum does not react with moisture, making it suitable for the hot and humid climate of Vietnam. This is an ideal choice if you prioritize long-term aesthetics and minimal surface maintenance.

Jotun- painted steel frames offer good rigidity and a corrosion-resistant Jotun powder coating, at approximately 25% lower cost compared to full aluminum. However, after prolonged use in high-humidity areas, some rust may appear at the edges or in scratched spots. This does not affect the product's quality but only slightly diminishes the elevator's original appearance.

Cabin frame color

The elevator frame isn't limited to a single color; you can fully customize it to match your overall interior design. THANGMAYNIDEC offers a price of approximately 3 million VND per elevator for changing the cabin frame color , applicable to both aluminum and steel.

What are the characteristics of glass used in elevators?

The glass cabin serves both as a load-bearing material and the most important aesthetic element of a glass elevator. Choosing the right type of glass, color, and pattern helps the cabin blend seamlessly with the living space and the personality of each family.

Glass material

All glass used in elevators must be safety tempered glass conforming to EN 81-20 standards.

Single-layer tempered glass: 8-10 mm thick, heat-treated to increase its hardness by 4-5 times compared to regular glass. When broken, it shatters into small, rounded fragments, preventing serious injury. This is the most common type, offering reasonable cost and high transparency.

Laminated safety glass: consists of two layers of glass with a PVB film sandwiched in between. Upon strong impact, the glass fragments remain firmly attached to the PVB film instead of falling to the ground. Suitable for outdoor glass elevators or locations exposed to significant external impacts.

To put it into perspective, imagine two adults weighing a combined 130kg standing directly on the glass without worrying about it breaking.

Glass color

The color of the glass greatly affects the overall feel of the house. If you're unsure which color to choose, you can refer to the most popular colors currently favored by customers at THANGMAYNIDEC.

Ultra-clear white elevator glass : Maximum transparency, allowing you to see outside from inside the cabin without any color obstruction. This is the ideal choice for modern, minimalist homes and is especially suitable for elevator shafts that need to bring natural light throughout the floors.

Tea-colored elevator glass : A warm, luxurious golden-brown tone that gently filters out outside light, providing just the right amount of privacy for the cabin. It perfectly complements natural wood interiors, gold-veined marble, and neoclassical styles.

Smoke gray elevator glass : A neutral gray tone that easily complements most interior styles. This is the safest color for families: it ensures sufficient light during the day, and at night, combined with lighting, creates a very impressive effect.

Turquoise elevator glass: The turquoise tone creates a pleasant and harmonious feeling. It's very suitable when combined with houses that have greenery inside.

Smoked black elevator glass: The black tone creates the most striking aesthetic impression among all colors. The cabin reflects light, creating an impressive visual effect and transforming the elevator into an artistic focal point. It's suitable for luxurious, modern homes or homeowners with a distinctive personality. However, this color is quite dark, so you should consider this before deciding to install it.

Glass pattern:

Besides color, the patterns on the glass are the highest level of personalization for elevator cabins. There are three common forms of pattern creation currently available.

Sandblasting patterns: Creating a frosted pattern directly on the glass surface by high-pressure sandblasting. The result is a subtle pattern with a slightly rough texture. Suitable for geometric patterns, stylized nature scenes, or calligraphy.

Digital printing: Direct printing onto the glass surface using heat- and moisture-resistant UV ink. High resolution, capable of printing complex colors and images. Suitable for traditional patterns, landscape paintings, or family logos.

Patterned window film: Applying a pre-printed film to the glass surface. This is the lowest cost method, easy to change later, but has a shorter lifespan than the two methods above.

Elevator Cabin Finishing Details

Besides the frame and glass, the small details inside the cabin directly affect the daily user experience and the overall aesthetics of the elevator.

Calling Control Panel (COP): There are two common types: traditional mechanical push-button panels and modern LCD touch-screen panels. LCD panels display the floor, direction of travel, and integrate an in-cabin camera.

Matrix display: An LED or LCD screen mounted above the cabin door displays the floor number in real time. Some high-end models also include a clock, temperature, or internal announcements.

Cabin handrails: 304 stainless steel handrails are mounted along the cabin walls, mandatory for elevators used by the elderly or young children. Round or flat handrails can be chosen depending on the design.

Cabin flooring: Popular choices include artificial stone flooring, moisture-resistant wood flooring, or non-slip embossed stainless steel flooring. Stone and wood flooring create a warm feeling, suitable for interior glass elevators.

Cabin ceiling and lighting: Flat ceilings with integrated recessed LED lights provide even illumination. Glass or mirrored vaulted ceilings create a more spacious feel. Some models add LED strip lights along the base of the cabin for a striking nighttime lighting effect.

Cabin doors and landing doors: Automatic sliding doors with 2 or 4 panels are standard for 350 kg elevators. The door panels can be glass-paneled, stainless steel-paneled, or painted to match the cabin frame.

Types of Motors Used in 350kg Glass Elevators

The motor determines the operating efficiency, smoothness, and lifespan of the elevator. With a load capacity of 350 kg, choosing the right motor will directly impact electricity costs and the daily user experience.

There are currently three common drive technologies for 350 kg glass elevators, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

Cable-driven motors (round and flat cables)

This is the most popular and trusted drive technology for home elevators today. High-strength steel cables are routed over the drive pulleys, combined with a VVVF control system, allowing the cabin to stop at each floor accurately and smoothly.

The main advantages of cable pulling are low investment costs , readily available and common components. More importantly, maintenance is very simple: technicians can quickly inspect, adjust, and replace cables without the need for complex specialized equipment.

Round cables are suitable for buildings with 3-6 floors, at speeds of 0.4-1.0 m/s.

Flat cables (MRL) allow for the elimination of the machine room, saving space and ensuring smoother operation. This is the optimal choice in terms of both economic and technical efficiency for 350 kg glass elevators.

Hydraulic motor

The hydraulic system uses a high-pressure oil pump to push the piston that lifts the cabin. The machine room is located next to the elevator shaft on the ground floor, not occupying any space above.

However, this is the noisiest of the three types. The oil pump operates continuously during each lifting cycle, generating considerable noise, especially when the engine room is located near living quarters.

Furthermore, over time, hydraulic pistons can leak oil through the seals. Leaked oil adheres to the elevator shaft walls and cabin bottom, requiring regular cleaning to avoid aesthetic and safety issues. Another significant limitation is that the hydraulic system is only suitable for a maximum of four floors because the pipeline pressure is not sufficient for taller buildings.

Screw motor

The screw drive system uses a main screw to directly push the cabin up and down, eliminating the need for cables or oil. It has a compact design, is quick to install, and doesn't require a separate machine room.

However, this technology is still relatively new in the Vietnamese market, and its practical operation has not been long. The movement speed is significantly slower than cable-driven systems, typically only reaching 0.15 - 0.3 m/s. Initial investment costs are higher, and maintenance costs are also high due to the limited availability of components.

Things to keep in mind when installing an elevator.

When installing an elevator, technical regulations must be followed to ensure its safety and durability. Below are some things you should pay special attention to before proceeding with construction:

Elevator shaft: The bottom of the shaft must have sufficient buffer depth of 300-500 mm. The shaft walls must be flat and conform to standards for accurate installation of guide rails.

Power supply: A separate 3-phase 380V power supply must be run from the main electrical panel. Do not share the power supply with other high-power electrical appliances in the house.

Ventilation function : The elevator shaft must have ventilation holes or exhaust fans to ensure that the machine room temperature does not exceed 40°C.

Inspection certificate: After installation, the elevator must be inspected by an authorized unit according to TCVN 6395. This is a mandatory procedure before it can be put into use.
