In an increasingly modernized world, we cannot deny the convenience of elevators, but when it is designed to meet the needs of “special people”, it becomes a great solution to help them conveniently move from one floor to another.
Elevators for the disabled are not only a technical innovation, but also a symbol of social progress and concern among members of the community, removing all barriers.
In this article, let's join Hoang Sa Viet Elevator Sankyo to learn more about the technical requirements, notes and benefits before installing an elevator for the disabled.
1. Technical standards of elevators for the disabled
- Elevator size for disabled people : the distance between the elevator door after opening is not less than 900mm. The space inside the elevator cabin is not less than 1100mm x 1400mm.
 - The waiting space size in front of the elevator door is not less than 1400mm x 1400mm.

- Wheelchair elevator doors must be equipped with self-closing devices and the opening and closing time must be greater than 20 seconds to ensure safety.
 - Slow travel speed: According to Directive 2014/33/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council, standards EN 81:41:2010, EN 81:20:2020 and EN 81:70:2018, the standard safe speed for elevators is 0.15 m/s.
 - Elevators must be designed with handrails.
 - The control panel in the elevator cabin is installed at a height of no more than 1200mm and no less than 900mm from the elevator floor to the center of the highest control button.
 - Controls shall have contrasting color characters or tactile signals and shall be provided with braille for the visually impaired.
 - Inside the elevator cabin for the disabled, stainless steel mirrors should be used for easy observation by the disabled.
 - The door sill groove must be level with the floor so that users do not trip when moving in and out of the elevator.

2. Notes before installing elevators for the disabled
For elevator doors and cabin doors
- Elevator doors must ensure the correct standard size so that users can turn their wheelchairs (elevator doors open and close automatically).
 - Elevator door safety devices must always be in good working order and the floor must be non-slip as it will always take longer for disabled people to move in and out of the elevator cabin.
 - The elevator opening or closing time will be set slower than the normal elevator. The elevator's photocell door safety system always needs to operate at its best and most stable.
 - The door sill groove must be level with the floor so that users do not trip when moving in and out of the elevator.

For in elevator cabin
- Regarding the internal dimensions of the elevator cabin for the disabled, there must be enough space for the user to turn the wheelchair.
 - The control panel system in the cabin should be designed at a height suitable for wheelchair users to operate.
 - Inside should use stainless steel mirrors for easy observation by disabled people.
 - The buttons on the control panel should have characters, contrasting colors, and braille to assist the visually impaired when using the control panel.

For elevator audio signals
- Audio cues will help people with vision problems, using sound to announce the use of floors or opening and closing stairs. helping users determine their current location and direction of movement.

3. Benefits of installing elevators for the disabled
- Increased mobility: Elevators create a convenient moving environment for people with disabilities, helping them to access and use all areas of the building easily.
 - Independence and autonomy: People with disabilities can move around without having to depend on the help of others. This helps to increase their sociability and autonomy.
 - Safer movement: Elevators provide a safe means of movement, reducing the risks associated with using stairs or other means.
 - Save time: Disabled people do not need to spend much time and effort to climb stairs or ask for help from people around, helping them save a lot of time.
 - Convenient for carrying assistive devices: Elevators make it easy for disabled people to carry assistive devices such as electric wheelchairs, electronic assistive device packages, helping them maintain maximum mobility.
 - Serving diverse needs: Elevators not only serve wheelchair users but also meet the needs of disabled people who can move by other means such as using canes or other special cases.
 - Increased access to jobs and education: Elevators increase the opportunity for people with disabilities to access educational and employment opportunities in high-rise buildings.

4. Suggest some types of elevators for the disabled at home
Screw elevator
Screw elevators use screw technology to operate, including a long screw shaft and a driving bearing. When the screw shaft rotates, the bearing engages the screw (and the lifting platform) to be raised and lowered. Elevators are widely used because of some outstanding advantages such as:
- It is the simplest elevator system of all types of elevators for the disabled because it has a simple structure, few parts, so the installation and maintenance costs are low and the installation time is fast (about 2-3 days).
- Due to the small size of the screw elevator , it is suitable for houses with limited space and does not require digging an elevator shaft.
- Extremely safe if the engine stops suddenly due to an error, the elevator will rest on the rope so it cannot fall freely, ensuring absolute safety for the user.
Some screw elevator models:
Electric chair lift
The electric chair lift is specially designed like a recliner and installed along the stair railing. The slide bar will be mounted along the stairs, when operating the motor will push the chair lift along the slide bar.
This elevator model is often applied to old houses with small areas without having to renovate the house too much.
Like screw elevators , chairs also have a simple structure, so installation and maintenance costs are low and installation time is quick.
In particular, the electric elevator chair can be installed on any type of stairs and folded when not in use. Maximum space saving for your home.
